When contemplating my 1-year-old kinda fancy dishwasher, and how much it sucks compared to my old builder-grade dishwasher that formerly believed to be pretty terrible, it occurred to me that perhaps planned obsolescence is a real thing. I got a little mad. The new dishwasher ($$$$) is worse than the old one ($) was at the end of its life! It’s not just about the money, but about the fact that I will need to replace this dishwasher and all my other “stuff” a lot sooner than my parents have had to replace their dishwashers and other appliances throughout their lifetime.
No, this isn’t a ranty, on-the-verge-of-lacking-Christmas-cheer non sequitur. It’s a way for me to contrast my frustration with the throw-away culture I engage in on a daily basis with the long-lasting, quality stuff that Stone Creek Trading is generously giving away here today. I can’t lie. I am jealous of the folks who win this giveaway, because these fermentation tools really rock.
There will be 3 very lucky winners:
- One person will win a $25 store credit to Stone Creek Trading (that’s more than enough to cover these glass crocks weights that I’m officially obsessed with and so many other great items).
- One person will win a Kraut Shredder. I have one of my own and I LOVE it. It’s a gorgeous, homey tool, and one that you can use to make even kraut pieces without the aid of a culinary school education (aka knife skills) or the use of food processor electricity.
- One grand prize winner will win a 5 liter, water-sealing crock. I have a the same crock in the 10 liter size and it’s my go-to for big batches (especially kimchi. Yum!). I never have surface issues, and it comes with the glass weights that I mentioned above. Dreamy!
We’re ending this giveaway at 11:59 EST on Tuesday, December 15th so that these items can be shipped in time for Christmas.

Why don’t appliances last as long as they used to??? It is so disconcerting that we are so short term motivated!!
Stacy says

Claire says
Great giveaway! Would love to have the wood mortar and pestle!
Geeka says
I had a dishwasher break last year, very simple fix, but the part was 80% of the cost of getting a new one (before labor). I’m also annoyed with the planned obsolescence of things. I think that this is why I gravitate towards vintage things.
Alex says
I got a waterseal crock for my birthday and made the ginger beet kraut recipe from your book. It was totally knockout and the best fermented thing I have produced yet!
Joy says
Well, the krout shredder is most intriguing – I’ve been looking for one that’s actually well made and they look great. Other than that, I love the floral mugs…

A 5 fermenting crock but they are so out!!
Emily says
Dwight,
We are actually fully stocked on our 5L fermenting crocks! Were you perhaps looking at the 15L? Unfortunately, we are sold out of the 15L crocks. Hope you find something else you enjoy!
Betty says
I would add the Rumtopf Crock. Looks like a great size for small batches!
ClareB says
Laugh, but– It’s raining outside right now and I have been stretching out use of my broken umbrella for 6 years. That is to say it’s been broken six years and I’m still using it with one side flopping like a broken wing. This makes the cheery looking Lowicz Folk Art Umbrella (compact) look mighty appealing to me. That’s not too helpful for fermenting, but what the hey!
Lisa says
I would get the cabbage tamper!
Devon H says
Holy crap I NEED the Rumtopf crock! I loooove it!!! Thanks for the giveaway! 🙂
Jerelle says
I would like the scissor tongs!

I covet the casserole dishes!
Roberta says
I would love to win the crock, to give to one of my kids.
Becky says
We’ve had the same fridge for years. And for years, we’re convinced it can go at any time. Meanwhile, everyone we know that’s actually gotten a new fridge during the time ours has been ‘dying’ has also had to replace theirs. So my fridge might not be pretty, and it might not be new, but hey, it works.
Brandon Ruckdashel says
Time for Kraut!
Joan says
Love the nut bowl and nut cracker. Cracking nuts and eating them out of the shell was a holiday tradition in my childhood home.

I love making kimchi and any type of sauerkraut, so that kraut shredder looks very handy!

That Rumtopf crock would look great in my kitchen!
Nancy A. says
This comes at such a good time for me! I have never fermented anything and am wanting to do it so badly! I would love to own one of their beautiful crocks and some weights. Would make it so much easier to get started and help my tummy get well!
Judy says
Share your frustration with the “new” appliances. We remodeled 3 years ago and already thinking about replacing the range and refrigerator. Fortunately there are lots of good things in life that supersede the frustrating ones, like the terrific products you keep introducing us to and the excellent people who sell them. My kitchen has never been so well supplied! It just keeps getting better and better???? Thank you.
Lindsay says
My dad would so love to make his next batch of sauerkraut in that crock! Perfect Xmas gift!
Joe Hatley says
I remember my mother making kraut and would love to make my own! This would be a great item to have.

Amyah says
OH! That crock is a dream of a life time! Don’t know when I would be able to afford one. In the mean time, I do my fermentation in glass jars. That would be quite a beautiful birthday (on the 17) and Xmas gift to win that one 🙂
Have a wonderful Holidays time everybody!
Lara McCormick says
A pair of those wooden scissor tongs would be perfect for grabbing pickles out of deep jars!

It is a particularly snowy day here in Utah and I am glad I already bought the ingredients for the moirpoix kraut! Thank you for the great blog posts and recipes. ????

I recently made, for the first time, my grandmother’s fermented dill pickles… and they worked!! I only had an ingredient list from my grandmother, so used the Ball recipe for measurements and they turned out great! A few of the very large pickles did get mushy, but the small and medium ones are very firm, crisp and delicious. I just used a food-grade plastic bucket. Would love to have a proper crock, however! 🙂

I need a Cabbage Tamper/Masher/Pounder
Rebecca H. says
I could use a nice set of glass weights. I never seem to have enough weight. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
Rebecca H. says
I guess I should read the contest direction before posting. I’d also like to add the mushroom nut cracker (how cute is that!) and the cabbage corer to my wish list.
Becky B says
Just getting into fermentation. This would be fabulous!
Juliann says
Wow! I want everything. I’ll be fermenting more cukes next summer and kraut is on the horizon!
MD Smith says
My local architectural salvage store seems to have far more huge “new” stoves to resell than nice, compact “old” ones, and I see lots of fridges the size of delivery trucks, but rarely a nice apartment-sized one. Hmmm. Do I notice a trend?
Made my first batch of kraut. Practice will def make things better, if not perfect. Waaaaaaay too salty!
Mary says
I’d love the cabbage corer to go with these!
Emily M says
The mortar and pestle. I’ve been wanting those for a while!
shelly says
wooden spoons!
carole says
I agree on the new appliances. We have had ours for 9 years and they are all falling apart. The ones we got used from 16 years ago are still going strong.
PS i would love to win the crock! crossing my fingers.
Cathy M T says
After clicking all around, I can honestly say there is hardly a thing I wouldn’t want to have. However, to answer the question, the nutcracker caught my eye because I just bought a bag of in-shell nuts to go with my “Nutcracker Ballet” decorating theme this year. So, wouldn’t that be perfect? Well, first I’m going to tie gold ribbons about each nut and hang them on the tree. After Christmas I’ll go at with……Hello, Santa? I need this nutcracker, please.
Nikki says
I would love to add a 10 liter fermentation crock to use on future Kimchi and Kraut projects. Stone Creek has a beautiful collection of fermentation tools, crocks and other wonderful ceramic household bakers, wooden kitchen tools and delightful wooden nut crackers. My wish list is growing……..
Jolene says
I absolutely love seeing which kitchen tools you truly recommend. Stone Creek Trading is a beautiful site. Kind of love the folk art pieces!

I’ve always wanted one of those cabbage pounders, although a wine bottle also works in a pinch.

Fermentation fever runs deep this year…. Would love a new gem to grow microbes in!

Received my copy of your book from my hubby for Christmas. I have enjoyed reading through it. I especially appreciate the kvass recipes that don’t use goitrogenic foods! I’m looking forward to having a small glass in the mornings. Thank you!!!
